How Is a Taxi Fare Calculated?

A taxi fare is built from two core components recorded by the taximeter: the base fare (flag drop) applied when the trip starts, and the per-kilometre rate added along the way. The total is the base fare plus distance multiplied by the per-km rate. Most provinces also have a minimum fare; if the computed amount falls below it, the minimum fare applies.

Who Sets Taxi Tariffs?

Turkey has no single national taxi tariff. In metropolitan municipalities, tariffs are set by UKOME (Transport Coordination Centre); in other provinces, by the provincial or district traffic commission together with the municipal council. As a result, the base fare and per-km rate differ in every province.

Taxi Classes

Some large cities have more than one taxi class. In Istanbul, for example, yellow, turquoise and black (luxury) taxis have different tariffs, with turquoise and black taxis priced higher than yellow ones. Cities such as Izmir distinguish between standard and luxury taxis.

Why Is the Fare an Estimate?

A taximeter charges not only for distance but also for time spent waiting in traffic. Bridge, motorway and tunnel tolls, as well as intercity return charges, can also change the total. This tool gives only an approximate base + distance amount; the real fare may vary with traffic conditions.
